The Importance of a Skin Exam

Yes, everyone can benefit from visiting their dermatologist once a year.

Your skin isn’t causing you any problems and you don’t notice any issues so you may be wondering why you should visit a dermatologist, right? However, doctors aren’t just there for you once problems arise; our Wellesley Hills, MA, dermatologists want to protect you against a variety of problems including skin cancer. That’s why annual skin exams are crucial for everyone, no matter who you are.

Who should get skin exams?

Everyone can benefit from getting an annual skin exam from one of our Wellesley Hills, MA, dermatologists. Of course, there are some people that should absolutely get screened at least once a year without fail. If you have these risk factors it’s particularly important that you keep up with annual exams,

  • You have freckles
  • You have fair skin
  • You have a family history of skin cancer
  • You have had several sunburns in your lifetime
  • You notice any changes in or problems with a mole
  • You have a history of using tanning beds

What does a skin exam entail?

Just as a regular doctor will check your entire body from head to toe during a physical evaluation our dermatologists will examine your skin from head to toe. What are we looking for? We are looking for any suspicious moles, growths or spots that could be cancerous. We may also use a special magnifying tool to take a closer look.

We will make note of any moles that we will want to continue to monitor. If we do notice any suspicious growths, we may recommend getting the growth biopsied. Sometimes your dermatologist will take photos of the moles or growths to see how they have progressed from one exam to the next.

Of course, this exam is as much for you as it is for the health of your skin; therefore, if you are noticing any issues or symptoms it’s also important to bring them to our attention. Sometimes we will perform a skin exam if you are dealing with symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, acne or other dermatological problems. Most of these conditions can be diagnosed through a simple skin exam.

Of course, if you ever notice a suspicious growth or other skin problems that are causing you concern, know that our Wellesley Hills, MA, skin doctors are happy to schedule a skin exam any time you need it.
